Entrepreneurs with startup business models often consider launching and hiring remote staff on a project or full-time basis. This can be a strategic way to leverage a highly skilled team cost effectively.

In this Q&A with Teramind’s own entrepreneur and founder Isaac , provides responses to commonly asked questions on hiring and managing a remote team.

When you’re hiring remote staff, what do you keep top of mind?

Isaac: My hiring process includes several steps. Once a candidate makes an inquiry, I send out a survey that gains insight into their background, personality and work ethic. Depending if they fill it out, how well and if it has original thoughts, gives me the lead way to continue on to a Skype interview. As we’re a remote team, the #1 quality I look for is active communication. Remote workers can feel isolated from their team members. Active communication helps bridge this gap, and it can lead to a more cohesive team.

How can remote teams stay aligned and focused on company/project goals?

Isaac: With a dispersed remote workforce and spending much time at home, it’s not unheard of to start feeling unmotivated and unengaged. I regularly use like Slack and Jira to stay connected to daily tasks. What’s nice about these applications, is they offer the opportunity to look at a project overview, so you can ideally see where pieces of the project are coming together to create the larger picture. This is great for a CEO, because we’re making decisions actively on where best to put our time, effort and money.

What are some ideal tools you use to communicate and manage team projects?

Isaac: I stand by the application Telegram. With over 50 employees remotely across the world, they’re working on different time zones and projects. I can have the Telegram messaging app on my phone and securely communicate with team members. I give instant feedback, and I even encourage casual conversation via a ‘group chat’ to stimulate the team to casually converse.

Where are you looking to further your own sales strategies?

Isaac: As a SaaS technology business, I’m always looking for ways to scale and grow the company. We’re currently seeking partnerships with various partners and resellers to add another active sales voice to our promotion.
